Here’s the beginning of one of the five episodes of Andy Warhol’s 15 Minutes, which aired on MTV throughout the mid 80s. The episodes featured interviews with musicians and culture makers of the day in a cable access show aesthetic. Not his first foray into television production, Warhol had previously produced Andy Warhol’s Fashion and Andy Warhol’s TV (an actual Manhattan cable access program), not to mention various commercials and cameos (such as on a very special episode of The Love Boat). It’s interesting to watch this now in an era of an MTV completely devoid of its M, a network that invests in its emptiness so genuinely, instead of genuinely believing in the seriousness as empty. I think Warhol saw an interest artistic vessel in the latter, but would probably be curious how the first functions today.
