Betye Saar, “Midnight Madonnas” (1996)
A lot of mother mileage in this one. Betye Saar is known primarily for her mixed media assemblages which often deal with the theme of race. In “Midnight Madonnas,” Christian imagery of the holy mother is linked with an African-American mother and child, drawing up associations of strength in reverence to a heritage of struggle, imbued with the added texture of personal keepsakes. It’s also worth mentioning that Saar is mother to artists Alison Saar and Lezley Saar.
