The Edo period (18th-19th century) Bakemono Zukushi handscroll was painted by an unknown artist and depicts 24 traditional monsters that used to spook the Japanese.
This isn’t exactly enlightment Sci-fi but they are a window into the psyche of the Japanese as they grappled with modernity and xenophobia. Japan only opened its borders to the West after US Navy Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry’s four-ship squadron appeared in Edo Bay in July 1853. The Japanese emperor wanted to keep foreigners out.
