Chris Ofili, New Museum (via Chris Ofili’s Gone and Dung It Again)

A more descriptive subtitle for Chris Ofili: Day and Night, the New Museum’s dazzling survey of Chris Offili’s paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, would be “Day and Night and Day.” For the show, co-curators Massimiliano Gioni, Gary Carrion-Murayari, and Margot Norton have installed 35 large-scale paintings, dozens of works on paper, and four sculptures in loosely chronological sequence. As visitors move up from the second floor to the third and then the fourth, the pieces shift from bright and bold to sober and somber, and then back to riotously polychromatic in the freshest canvases.

The New Museum‘s third triennial, Surround Audience, is not nearly as immersive as its title suggests, and it sabotages many of the most conventional two-dimensional and sculptural works on view. Co-curators Lauren Cornell — the former director of Rhizome — and Ryan Trecartin — the video and performance artist — surely didn’t do this on purpose, but the lion’s share of the exhibition’s paintings, sculptures, and photographs flop. Videos, installations, quasi-archival collections, and performances by Lisa Tan, Donna Kukama, Josh Kline, Geumhyung Jeong, Nadim Abbas, and Eduardo Navarro, among others, are the show’s most memorable, but this tumefied triennial does a disservice to all 51 artists and their more than 150 works by diluting the experiences of its most enveloping pieces and overwhelming the more static ones.

I admit to feeling crippled by the New Museum’s Here and Elsewhere show. As the first major show of art from the “Arab world” in a New York museum, it stirs a huge well of emotions and frustrations about a topic that needs volumes to unpack. To their credit, curators Natalie Bell and Massimiliano Gioni have done a solid job of bringing together a lot of important work, but there are many shortcomings in the recent renaissance of Arab art, and although many of the issues aren’t specific to this show, they are evident in it. This is an attempt to understand some of them.
