Our poetry editor, Joe Pan, has selected a poem by Wendy Xu for his series that brings original poetry to the screens of Hyperallergic readers. Calling All Mail Artists, Exhibition on the Way by Kate Wadkins
Seven weeks ago, Hyperallergic began collecting Mail Art for our Mail Art Bulletin. Now, we are super excited to announce a new leg of our Mail Art project!
In tandem with Northside Open Studios, Hyperallergic will be curating a Mail Artshow from June 16-19. Hyperallergic HQ will be in the midst of the action during the four-day event, and the Mail Art show will be displayed in our space. "It is by caring about things that we infuse the world with importance," wrote Harry G. Frankfurt in The Reasons of Love. Thus, from a passion “to create something that would support independent voices in the arts and [to] find a way that people could get paid for their work (which is far too rare in the field),” Veken Gueyikian and Hrag Vartanian conceived a venue that would go on to champion, challenge, and change the ways people engage with art. With wry humor and incisive coverage, in the five years since its founding, Hyperallergic has managed to become a major force in the world of art.
Headquartered in Williamsburg, Hyperallergic’s roots easily extend to Bushwick. Vartanian lived in the neighborhood from 2000 to 2008, and the Hyperallergic co-founders are “always in Bushwick, since the boundaries (as you know) are more blurry than people want to admit sometimes.” Indeed, as anyone who has scanned old maps of Brooklyn (or lived in the borough for more than one year) can attest, where one neighborhood begins and another ends is anything but stable: Rezoning propelled by economics, politics, and population growth has frequently and dramatically changed the edges of neighborhoods—once upon a time, Williamsburg and Greenpoint were both part of Bushwick.

Hyperallergic Weekend continues our aspirations to develop a publication that will engage with ideas and news on a daily basis. We’re very happy that Hyperallergic has been able to grow over the past two years to become an important venue for cultural discussion.
