#architecture #design #best and worst of 2013 #Urban DesignAround the world people are rapidly moving to cities in an incredible manifestation of consolidated growth. The Museum of Modern Art’s Uneven Growth: Tactical Urbanisms for Expanding Megacities is the culmination of a 14-month initiative to address developing problems — from affordable housing to the limits of available land — in six of those cities, by involving the communities most impacted.

In his keynote speech closing the World Architecture Festival last week, Moshe Safdie called for a reevaluation of how we design our cities, Dezeen reported. The 76-year-old architect argued that his profession’s understanding of “what urban design is all about” needs a “reorientation.”
Over 700 miles of underdeveloped space are in the shadows of New York City’s elevated highways and rails. Last week, the Design Trust for Public Space in partnership with the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) published Under the Elevated: Reclaiming Space, Connecting Communities, the results of a two-year study on utilizing these overlooked places.

Following on the heels of New York, London, and many other urban centers, Boston is the latest city to envision how best to manage the certainty of rising water levels due to global warming. Last month, Living with Water, a design competition sponsored by a coalition of groups including the City of Boston, The Boston Harbor Association, the Boston Redevelopment Authority, and the Boston Society of Architects, announced 9 finalists from 50 submissions.

MIAMI BEACH — With prefabricated housing now essential in addressing housing shortages, emergency relief, and even architecture in Antarctica, the mid-20th century pop-up designs of the late Jean Prouvé are receiving renewed attention. A self-taught architect who was skilled in metalwork, he used the sturdy steel frames newly available for mass production to design mobile military housing in 1939. The only surviving example of this “4×4 Demountable Military Shelter” is on view with the Paris-based Galerie Patrick Seguin at Design Miami, which opened this Wednesday in Miami Beach.

TEMPORARY OUTDOOR STRUCTURES FOR 2013 IDEAS CITY FESTIVAL
NEW YORK MAY 1-4, 2013
Registration Deadline: January 18, 2013
Submission Deadline: February 8, 2013
As part of the 2013 IDEAS CITY FESTIVAL, Storefront for Art and Architecture jointly with the New Museum and Architizer are launching the StreetFest competition for the design, management, and construction of temporary outdoor spaces that produce new ways for collective gathering and city engagement. On Saturday, May 4, 2013, one winning entry will occupy designated outdoor space along the Bowery during the StreetFest. We envision fabricating a minimum of ten structures that will cover approximately 1000-1500 square feet. These temporary outdoor structures will accommodate a multiplicity of activities including: vendors, workshop areas, outdoor classrooms, demonstrations, installations, music, and other performances and exhibitions.
This competition asks for designs that envision street tents not only as shelters but also as active elements within the collective construction and understanding of the city. StreetFest calls for architects, artists and engineers to re-envision the performativity of temporary outdoor structures including the material, social, and educational possibilities.
